Roots and Wings

HOME

The music chosen for 5 Rhythms classes is very personal to each teacher. We try to choose music that supports each rhythm and, at times, we will work without music.  I love DJing and I have very varied tastes. Through the course of a wave, you might find yourself moving to anything from gentle classical to full-on techno. I am passionate about soul, ska, disco, funk, 60s psychedelia, british and celtic folk, folk-rock, house, acid house, psy-trance, swing, Detroit techno, punk.

It’s unlikely you will enjoy everything that I play, just as it is unlikely I would like everything in your CD collection or on your iPod. Finding a way of moving to a tune you wouldn’t normally like can really open up our dance. If it doesn’t, you might get on better with the next tune!

Teachers are often asked for recommendations for music to dance at home. First, try checking out your own music collection if you have one, you’ve probably got all of the rhythms in there! If you are online at home, get connected to Spotify and have a root around. Gabrielle Roth has produced a selection of CDs that support the practice, many of which have waves in sequence. They are all available (including the tracks embedded in this site) via the Raven Recordings website.

The YouTube links along the side of the page are tasters of tunes that I’ve used recently in classes. Flowing: Winter Winds by Mumford and Sons. Staccato: Word Up by Cameo. Chaos: Silver Gun by Robert Palmer. Lyrical: Daisy by Karine Polwart. Stillness: Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber.
